AROUND THE HORN

- Southern leads the all-time series 8-5. The Salukis have won four-straight and six of their last eight games against Belmont. Southern defeated Belmont twice in mid-weeks last season.Â
- SIU finished 10-2 in mid-week games last season. The Saluki offense scored seven or more runs in nine of the 12 contests.Â
- Mason Hiser will start on the mound. The senior pitched six scoreless innings on Opening Day to earn the win.Â
- SIU is off to its best start since 2017 with a 3-1 record.Â
- Saluki Baseball earned a road series win at Jackson State last weekend. Southern outscored JSU 32-15 in the four-game series. SIU shutout the Tigers in the opener and pounded out 26 runs in the final two games.Â
- SIU relief pitchers Trey McDaniel, Matthew Steidl, Kyle Dixon and Mitchell Jackson were dominant in the series opener. The four combined to allow one run (0.64 ERA) in 14.1 innings pitched. In addition, the four combined for 14 strikeouts and just one walk.Â
- The Salukis lead the nation in stolen bases with 13. J.T. Weber holds a conference-best four steals. Nick Neville, Addison Fugitt and Philip Archer have stole two bases each. Last season, SIU was fifth nationally with a school record 144 steals.Â
- The offense has drawn 42 free passes — 28 walks and 14 hit by pitches — through four games. Southern walked 10-plus times in the last two games. In the national rankings, SIU is first in HBP (14) and eighth in walks (28).Â
- Junior infielder Grey Epps reached base six times in his first start of the season at JSU (2/15). He slugged a three-run home run, was hit four times and drew one walk.Â
- Senior infielder Ian Walters leads the team in batting average (.400) and runs batted in (6). He has reached base two-plus times in all four games.Â
- Neville has recorded three hits in two-straight games. The South Carolina transfer ranks first in the Missouri Valley Conference in hits (8) and doubles (3).Â
