CoSIDA Release and Complete Teams
SIU men's basketball graduate center Barret Benson was one of five players named to the Academic All-District 5 team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today. Benson holds a perfect 4.0 GPA at SIU pursuing his master's degree in recreation professions.Â
Benson graduated in just three years from Northwestern with a 3.63 GPA in radio, TV and film. At SIU, Benson is SIU's leading rebounder (5.7 per game) and third-leading scorer (10.8), and he's shooting 51% from the field, 35% from the 3-point line and 70% from the free throw line. He has two double-doubles and also leads SIU in blocked shots (20). In MVC games, he has been even better, averaging 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.Â
District 5 is comprised of every Division I school in the state of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. Three of the five members of this year's District 5 team are members of the Missouri Valley Conference -- Bradley's Nate Kennell and Loyola's Cameron Krutwig joined Benson. Additionally, UNI's AJ Green was named to the District 6 team. Each of the eight districts have a five-man Academic All-District team, and all Academic All-District recipients are eligible for Academic All-America teams, which will be announced March 9.Â
