A year ago today I was introduced as the men's basketball head coach at Southern Illinois University. There were numerous times throughout this first year where I caught myself smiling for no other reason than realizing that I am actually back here. I have always said that what makes SIU special is this Southern Illinois community and the passion they have for SIU Basketball.
Â
After being back immersed in this community for a year now, what I really want to say is thank you, more importantly, thank you for never changing. Thank you for always appreciating heart and hustle over talent and potential. Thank you for always supporting a true team over the individual. Thank you for cheering louder for a loose ball than for a jump shot. Thank you for the standing ovations for the shot clock violations, the charges, and the extra passes that create the basket. Thank you for understanding what winning looks and sounds like. Thank you for knowing that winning ugly is actually just winning. Thank you for believing that magic can always happen at home. Thank you for making the Banterra Center feel like the "Arena" again. Â And thank you for the standards you have set and for expecting them to be met.Â
Â
I hope everyone is staying safe through these unprecedented times in our country. We will get through this. After we do, our program will get back to work and continue to improve. Like so many teams before them, next year's team will try to leave a legacy that will matter, that will reach, and that will last. Go Dawgs.
