CARBONDALE, Ill. - During a period of uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Saluki Athletics has kept its focus on the well being of its student-athletes.
The SIU Foundation's Saluki Cares Student Emergency Fund is leading the way, providing financial assistance for housing costs, food, and technology necessary for taking courses remotely or online. Already, this fund has assisted more than 800 SIU students. For more information or to donate, click here.
"We want to ensure the student-athletes are coming first," said Meade Smith, director of strength and performance. "We are not panicking about losing off-season performance gains. We have athletes from all over the country and it is affecting everyone differently. We are encouraging athletes to stay home and practice social distancing. In addition to that, we're providing daily workout routines and nutrition tips, along with structured programs they can do at home."
For student-athletes who have remained in the Carbondale area, the Salukis are providing items such as milk, snack bars, fruit yogurt, and breakfast sandwiches — items similar to what the student-athletes would receive at the Saluki Fueling Station at Banterra Center on a daily basis.
"Our administration and head coaches have done a tremendous job of locating all of our student-athletes and ensuring that we are doing everything in our power to assist athletes through this difficult time," Smith said.
Smith estimated that as many as 100 athletes have been aided by the Saluki Fuel pickups, providing some stability for athletes during an uncertain period. That effort has been funded through the Student-Athlete Well Being Fund.
"We never could have imagined that the Student-Athlete Well-Being Fund would be used to support our student-athletes during a global pandemic," said Kate Hanson, assistant athletics director for development. "The fund was established to support our student-athletes in their endeavors off the court, field, or out of the pool; and it begins with nutrition. These resources have become so critical during this time, and we know now that this fund is more important than ever. Please consider giving to Saluki Athletics and support student-athletes during this unprecedented time."
