CARBONDALE, Ill. - The SIU men's basketball team added Urbana High School guard Chris Cross to the 2020-21 basketball roster, head coach Bryan Mullins announced today. Cross will be a freshman for the Salukis in 2020-21.Â
"We are excited to welcome Chris and the Cross family back to our program," Mullins said. "He comes from a great family that takes great pride in this region and university. He brings a great work ethic, toughness, and competitiveness to the program. He will represent this program very well on and off the court."
Cross (6-2, 195) was born in Carbondale and is the nephew of former Saluki guard Joshua Cross, who played at SIU from 1998-01 and scored 787 points over 120 games. Chris's father, Joe, played basketball at Illinois.Â
Chris led Urbana to back-to-back regional titles in 2019 and 2020 after a 30-year drought for the school. As a senior, he earned All-Area recognition from the Champaign News-Gazette after averaging 14.5 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals per game.Â
Cross is the fourth freshman in SIU's recruiting class, joining Kyler Filewich, Eric Butler and Dalton Banks. The Salukis also added transfers J.D. Muila, Steven Verplancken, and Anthony D'Avanzo to the 2020-21 roster. Cross and Will Keller are the program's walk-ons in 2020-21.Â
