OPENING TIP
- SIU played Monday and Tuesday at Indiana State after a 21-day COVID layoff. SIU was without star sophomore Marcus Domask, who missed the game with a left foot injury. Domask is being reevaluated this week.
- Kyler Filewich is the reining MVC Newcomer of the Week, becoming SIU's first freshman center to earn the honor since 2010 (Gene Teague). SIU's young roster has earned five MVC Newcomer of the Week honors since the start of last season: Marcus Domask (3x last year) and Ben Harvey (Once in December this year) have also earned the award.
- Ninety percent of SIU's scoring this season is coming from freshmen and sophomores, which is the second-highest percentage of underclassmen scoring in the nation. (Alabama A&M, 96%)
- Trent Brown went 1-for-2 from the 3-point line in the season opener at SEMO, and his season 3-point field goal percentage this season stayed at or above 50% for 10-straight games. After going 5-14 at Indiana State from downtown, Brown is shooting "just" 48% from the 3-point line this season, which is 18th-best in the country (min. 50 attempts).
- Lance Jones leads the MVC in steals per game (1.8/g). The last SIU player to lead the MVC in steals per game was now-head coach Bryan Mullins in 2008.
- New patch: SIU will wear RH patches on its jerseys for the remainder of the season, in memory of SIU and MVC Hall-of-Fame coach Rich Herrin, who died on Christmas night at the age of 87.
- SIU started the season 7-0, the program's best start to a season since 1947-48.
- SIU had seven-game winning streaks in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
- SIU leads the all-time series, 37-32. In Carbondale, SIU leads, 24-7.
- Series trends: SIU is...
- 2-2 in its last 4 games against UNI overall
- 5-2 in its last 7 overall
- 6-6 in its last 12 overall
- 3-0 in its last 3 home games
- SIU's active 3-game home court winning streak against UNI is the program's longest since winning 11-straight at home against UNI from 1998-2008.
- Eleven of the last 13 games in the SIU-UNI series have been decided by single digits; the two exceptions: an 11-point SIU win in 2018 and a 12-point UNI win last year.
- SIU overcame a 21-point deficit to beat UNI in Carbondale in 2019, the fifth-largest comeback in MVC history.
