UNI's second-half surge takes down SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The SIU men's basketball team took a 30-27 lead into halftime, but Northern Iowa outscored the Salukis 47-32 in the second half in a 74-62 UNI win on Saturday afternoon at Banterra Center.Â
"Give credit to Northern Iowa. They played a great second half. Obviously, that's where the game was decided," SIU head coach Bryan Mullins said. "I need to do a better job getting our guys ready for that second half. Offensively and defensively, we aren't going to be able to win if we can't play 40 minutes of consistent basketball."
The Salukis (7-6, 1-6 MVC) held UNI (5-10, 3-6 MVC) to 33% shooting in the first half -- SIU's best defensive half since the December 21 upset win at Butler. But the Panthers, the MVC preseason favorites to win the league, flipped the script in the second half, shooting 69% from the field and scoring 47 points, their best scoring half in the MVC this season.Â
SIU led by as many as seven in the first half before settling for a 30-27 halftime lead. The Salukis had opportunities to stretch the lead but went just 2-for-9 from the free throw line in the opening half. Then, Northern Iowa got hot in the second half, hitting 13 of 15 shots at one point to open up a double-digit lead. The Salukis hung around but couldn't keep pace, shooting 37% in the second half and 2-for-10 from the 3-point line.Â
"We have to play simple basketball in the second half," Mullins said. "Make the easy pass, and keep our heads up when we get into the paint."
Southern's offense was a balanced attack, with nine of 10 players scoring. Ben Harvey (10 points), Kyler Filewich (10 points, 7 rebounds), and Dalton Banks (10 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) led the way for SIU. On the other side, Trae Berhow, Bowen Born, and Noah Carter were a 3-headed monster for UNI, scoring 54 points on 20-of-37 shooting. For the game, UNI became the sixth-straight SIU opponent to shoot 50% or better from the field and handed SIU its sixth-straight loss.Â
The Salukis and Panthers turn around and play again on Sunday at 5 p.m. in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPN2.Â
"We've had opportunities to win, and we haven't been consistent enough for 40 minutes," Mullins said. "That's our challenge for our guys tomorrow."
