CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois men's swimming and diving team head to Muncie, Indiana to meet against MAC-opponent Ball State on Saturday, February 20. The Salukis and Cardinals start action in the pool at 12:00PM ET. Video streaming from Ball State will be available here. Live results are here.
SIU-BALL STATE HISTORY
The Salukis have seen the Cardinals in dual-meet action since 1996, since joining the MAC, and hold the top end of the 3-1 of the all-time record. Ball State and SIU have not swam one-on-one since 2012, where the Salukis took the top, 146-91 in Muncie.
In the only competition between the two last season, the MAC Championships, the Salukis took the head over Ball State with 622 team points versus 420, achieving third and fourth places at the league event. The Salukis overtopped Ball State with a swimmer and diver over the Cardinals in every event, except the 200 freestyle relay. The best finishes included a third place finish in the 100 backstroke from then-freshman Jared Holder (48.58), third place finish in the 200 back by senior Logan Ackley (1:48.22), and another third place title for their 200 freestyle relay squad (1:21.37).
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Ball State men have 15 active swimmers holding records in the top-10 times for the Cardinals, including freshman Joey Garberick with records in the 100 (55.19) and 200 breaststroke (2:02.86), sophomore Aiden Maurer in the 200 (1:39.97), 500 (4:35.55), and 1650 freestyle (16:11.58), and sophomore Jared Holder, the current men's 100 yard backstroke record-winner with a clocked time of 48.50.
The Cardinals are currently 3-0 in dual-meet action this season. They took home wins against Eastern Illinois, Bellarmine, and Xavier -- their largest marginal win, 827.5-738.5 points. At Xavier, the men won nine of 14 events, with Garberick and sophomore Owen Chaye bringing in two indivdual wins at the meet.
