
Salukis Wrap Up Day One of Don DeNoon Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University track and field program began their 2021 with the Don DeNoon Invitational on Friday at the SIU Recreation Center.
The first day of the Don DeNoon Invite started with the men's weight throw, where Ricky Hurley, competing as an unattached participant, finished second with a top mark of 19.50m (63-11.75). Sophomore Dylan Beaird finished third with a mark of 16.00m (52-6), coming just seven inches short of his personal-best.
Over at the pole vault, Kyle Zeinemann finished second after clearing 4.72m (15-5.75), while Gary Glenewinkel came in fifth after posting a mark of 4.42m (14-6). Following the conclusion of the pole vault, the Salukis got underway with the shot put and claimed three top-five finishes. Hurley took second after throwing for a mark of 17.03m (55-10.5), while newcomer Cole Taggart threw for a personal- best mark of 16.37m (53-8.5). Junior Jelle De Jong threw for a lifetime-best mark of 13.56m (44-6) to take fifth.
In the 60 meter dash finals, sophomore Ja'Den Johnson earned first after running for a time of 6.99 seconds, finishing just one-tenth of a second behind his lifetime-best. Kyle Lind finished two spots behind Johnson with a time of 7.19 seconds. The 60 meter hurdle finals saw Lind finish third with a time of 8.28, followed by junior Omar Rodgers, who trailed behind in fifth with a time 8.75 seconds.
Freshman Willie Johnson won his first collegiate event after finishing with a time of 51.17 in the 400 meter. James Croft took second in the same event after crossing the finish line at 52.36, followed by Rodgers in fourth at 52.76.
Competing as an unattached athlete, senior Willie Rodgers won the high jump after clearing 2.05m (6-8.75). Junior Dawson Plab tied second with Caleb Vogel after posting a mark of 2.02m (6-7.5).
SIU's women will take to the track tomorrow for day two of the Don DeNoon Invite. Competition resumes with the weight throw and pole vault at 10 a.m. Track events begin at 2 p.m. with the 60 meter hurdle preliminaries. Live results of the meet can be found at SIUSalukis.com.
