Salukis Finish Tied for Sixth at Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. – Matthis Besard posted the lowest score of the day for the Southern Illinois University men's golf team, firing a 5-under par 67, as the Salukis tied for sixth at the Louisiana Classics on Tuesday at the Oakbourne Country Club.
SIU posed a team score of 290 in the third round at the par-72, 6,898-yard course to finish the tournament. Southern Illinois concluded the 54-hole event with a team score of 875 with the No. 5-ranked Illinois golf program claiming the team title at 823.
Besard recorded the Salukis top individual 54-hole performance (72-78-67=217), finishing in a tie for 16th individually. Freshman Justin Wingerter (73-74-74=221) finished in a tie for 33rd with Birgir Magnusson (74-72-77-223) finishing in a tie for 45th, Tom Cleaton (75-75-75=225) in a tie for 54th and Josh Mackin (82-70-74=226) in a tie for 58th.
The Fighting Illini finished the day with the tournament's only sub-270 score in any round at 268 to win its sixth Louisiana Classics team championship. Jerry Ji led Illinois with a total of 203, tying the tournament record for the lowest 54-hole score.
Illinois claimed the 38-stroke victory over the host Louisiana (861) and North Texas (864). Sam Houston (867) placed fourth, followed by ULM (873) in fifth and UMKC (875) and Rice (875) tied with SIU for sixth.
The Salukis will shift their attention to the Craft Farms Intercollegiate, set to take place in Gulf Shores, Ala., on March 28-30.
