
Salukis outperform Evansville, Illinois State in the Pool

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- While recognizing the program's 10 graduating seniors at meet breaks, the Saluki Swimming and Diving teams outshined in Friday afternoon's tri-meet against Evansville and the women of Illinois State. The Saluki men took the Purple Aces races, 196-91 team points, while the women out raced Evansville, 187-110 and the Redbirds, 178-119. Sophomore Adam Cernek won three individual events, while four from the women's team won at least two individual events.

Women's Team:
Senior Sierra Forbord broke a school record in her leg of the second-place women's 400-freestyle relay squad A. Leading off, she now owns the 100-freestyle record (50.12), surpassing by .29 seconds, held back in 2009.
Senior Abigail Young completed two more season bests in competition with her 100- (56.09) and 200- (2:03.85) butterfly performances.
With her third and second first-place titles in the 100- and 200-breaststroke, newcomer Mima Zaborska broke her own school record, outshining her previous time by .40 seconds.
In her first 50-freestyle event of the season, sophomore Lucia Romero garnered points for the Salukis and a first place win, touching the wall in 24.07 and ranking third amongst SIU this year.
The women's 100-backstroke event saught 1, 2, 3 finishes for Southern Illinois. Romero earned the top place (56.02), followed by senior Imogen Watson (57.15), and close behind was junior Deven Speed (57.18).
Men's Team:
Showing strength in the distance, sophomore Sam Flessner and freshman and MAC Swimmer of the Week Austin Kinsler took the two and three spots in the 1000-freestyle event. Both Flessner (9:45.96) and Kinsler (9:50.01) swam lifetime bests.
Junior Zander Minano records his first 50-free first place title of the season. The transfer clocks in (20.41) as the second-fastest sprint of the season for the Salukis.
Freshman Gustav Persson takes the crown in both the 100- and 200-breasstroke, he earned his second-best season record in the 100-breast (57.03).
The 200-Medley Relay squad of Cernek, Persson, Minano, and Csuvarszki clocked in at the Salukis' top time of the year in the event. The 1:30.03 dash surpasses the previous season record by .10 against Missouri State.

The Saluki women are back in the pool on March 26, where Southern will head on the road to Terre Haute, Indiana to challenge Indiana State and Ball State in tri-meet action.
