
Salukis Win Three Events on First Day of Bill Cornell Spring Classic

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University track and field program opened up its 2021 outdoor season with three event titles at the first day of the Bill Cornell Spring Classic on Friday at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex.
Ricky Hurley was the first Saluki to win an event, as the Fox River Grove, Ill., native won the discus throw with a toss of 49.94m (163'-10.25"). The senior thrower started off the day by fouling on his first toss before connecting on a throw of 49.16m on his second attempt, before hitting his winning mark on his third attempt. The next closest competitor - SEMO's Dylan Clark - trailed Hurley by over eight feet (47.35m/155'-4.25").
In the women's discus, BriYanna Robinson was the top collegiate finisher, as she tossed for 45.20m (148'-3.5"). She began the competition by connecting on throws of 40.82m and 40.80m on her first two attempts before her top mark came on the third.
Over at the triple jump, Willie Rodgers secured SIU's third win of the day after the senior leaped for a mark of 15.00m (49'-2.5"), which came on his last attempt in the event. On the women's side, Trinity Daniels wrapped up the day with a win after jumping for 11.87m (38'-11.5"), beating teammate Britney Mosby by one foot (11.57m/37'-11.5").
Day two gets underway at 10 a.m. with the men and women's javelin throw. Field events continue through the end of the shot put, which is set to begin at 1 p.m. Running events begin at 12 p.m. with the women's steeplechase.
