MVC Release
ST. LOUIS - SIU sophomore point guard Lance Jones was named All-MVC Third Team, and freshman center Kyler Filewich was named to the league's All-Freshman team, the Missouri Valley Conference announced on Tuesday.Â
Jones (Evanston, Ill.) ranked in the top-10 of the MVC in points, assists, steals, 3-point field goal percentage and minutes played. After Marcus Domask's injury, Jones played 34 minutes per game and averaged 15 points while shooting 42% from the 3-point line. He scored in double figures 18 times this year, including four 20-point game and a 30-point performance against the nation's No. 1 defense, Loyola. He hit seven 3-pointers in a win over UNI, the most 3-pointers hit by any Saluki since Kent Williams hit seven 3-pointers in a game in 2000.Â
Filewich (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) led all MVC freshmen in rebounding (5.7 per game) and ranked in the top-5 of MVC freshmen in four major statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, and blocks. Filewich was outstanding down the stretch for the Salukis, averaging 8.5 points and 6.9 rebounds in the season's final 14 games, while Marcus Domask was injured. In that span alone, Filewich scored in double figures eight times and had 9+ rebounds five times.Â
SIU faces Bradley on Thursday at 5 p.m. on the first round of the MVC Tournament. The winner faces top-seeded Loyola on Friday at 11 a.m.
