AROUND THE HORN
- The SIU-SEMO game is SIU's lone road game during a 23-game stretch. The Salukis just wrapped up an 11-game home stand, going 10-1. After Wednesday's game at SEMO, the Salukis start another 11-game home stand with a three-game series against Little Rock at Itchy Jones Stadium next weekend.Â
- The last time SIU and SEMO met in baseball, the Salukis came away with a 6-4 win on March 11, 2020. That game was SIU's final sporting event of the Spring 2020 semester. All athletics were suspended the next day due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Â
- SIU is ranked No. 22 in the Collegiate Baseball National Top-30 Poll released on Monday. SIU is ranked in the poll for a third-straight week. The Salukis broke into the rankings at No. 25, fell to No. 27 after going 3-1 against Evansville, and jumped to No. 22 this week after sweeping Marshall.
- SIU is the top team receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll, which is a top-25 poll. SIU is de facto tied for 26th in that poll with Louisiana Tech and Arizona. The Salukis were also receiving votes in the NCBWA poll, but that poll doesn't rank-order teams that are receiving votes. D1Baseball, Perfect Game, and Baseball America also produce national top-25 polls, and SIU is not ranked in those polls, none of which have a "receiving votes" section.
- SIU's offense has been among the nation's best, ranking in the top-10 nationally in home runs (2nd), slugging percentage (3rd), batting average (5th), hits (9th), and runs scored (9th).Â
- SIU (17-1) and Tennessee (17-4) are tied for the most wins in the nation.
- SIU started the season 14-0, which was the best start in school history (prev: 11-0 in 1967).
- SIU won 19-straight games dating back to last season (the final five games of 2020, and the first 14 games of the 2021 season), which is the third-longest winning streak in school history (SIU had 24-game winning streaks in 1973 and 1974).Â
