Salukis rout Austin Peay, 15-0

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The SIU baseball team scored nine runs in the first two innings, and the pitching staff tossed a seven-hit shutout in a 15-0 win over Austin Peay on Tuesday night at Itchy Jones Stadium.Â
"The big key today was the success we had on the mound," SIU head coach Lance Rhodes said. "Multiple guys went out there and threw up zero after zero. We really needed it, from a confidence standpoint with the arms. It's a long season, and sometimes you go through ups and downs. It was nice to see several people bounce back and have good days on the mound. It was exciting to see. We swung the bats well and played solid defense, too. It was just an all-around solid game in all three main areas."
SIU (21-6) dominated the game from the start. On the mound, Noah Farmer set the tone with three scoreless frames to start the day. Offensively, the Salukis scored five runs in the first inning and four more in the second, all with two outs. J.T. Weber had an RBI single; Philip Archer had a two-RBI double; and Vinni Massaglia hit a two-run homer in the first inning. In the second inning, Weber hit a two-run single, and Archer followed with a two-run double.Â
"It was nice to see us score early again. That's what we were doing early in the season," Rhodes said. "It puts pressure on the opposing team to have to come back against us. Over that stretch of games when we were struggling, we were trying to score late in games to catch up. It was a typical game from where we were earlier in the year, so it was refreshing to see it again."
The Salukis hit up and down the lineup, but Archer was the standout, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a homer, and seven RBIs. His homer was a towering shot to right center that somehow cleared the wall despite a 15-mph wind coming straight in from right field.Â
"Those two guys (Weber and Archer) have been run producers all year long," Rhodes said. "Phil is the silent assassin in the six-hole. He benefits so much from all the traffic that's created above him, and you give credit to Phil: He's knocking them in left and right. It's a collective team effort. Again, I'll use the word relentless, but you have those five guys in front of him that have relentless at-bats, and at some point, the pitcher is going to cave. When you stack one good hitter after another, and you have a lot of guys on base, and you give Phil credit. He's been driving them in all year long. It's been impressive. He was locked in tonight. We could have played another game, and he probably would have had another four hits. They threw him breaking balls; they threw him a changeup; they threw him a fastball. He got a hit on just about every pitch they threw at him tonight."
SIU was outstanding all night on the mound, as well. Farmer earned the win on the staff day for the Salukis, allowing three hits in three shutout innings. Bubba Hall, Mitchell Jackson, Kyle Back, Kyle Dixon, Braden Babcock, Gage O'Brien and Trey McDaniel came in behind him to finish SIU's second shutout of the year. Austin Peay (9-17) only got a runner to third base twice in the game.Â
"I was most pleased with the competition that every single pitcher had in the strike zone," Rhodes said. "Every single guy that ran out there was throwing the ball in the strike zone competitively."
"That's what we needed really bad," Rhodes said of Farmer's three scoreless innings to start the game. "The tempo of his delivery, the conviction of his pitches, everything looked like a guy that was fully confident in going out there and getting guys out. He set the tone for the rest of the bullpen. One after the other followed that same tone. We need everyone in that pen to step up like they did tonight."
The Salukis were great on defense, as well. Tristan Peters made two diving catches in center field. Brad Hudson made a sliding grab in foul territory in right field. Ian Walters made a leaping grab to save a run. Archer dug several throws out of the dirt.
In all, it was an all-around win for an SIU team that was going through its first rough stretch of the season, having lost five of its last six games coming into today after starting the season 19-1.Â
UP NEXT: SIU hosts Bellarmine and Northern Illinois to Carbondale this weekend. The Salukis will play each team twice, beginning with Bellarmine at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 9.Â
