VALPARAISO, Ind. -- The Southern Illinois Salukis (0-10-1) held the Beacons of Valparaiso (6-4) scoreless for 74 minutes in an even battle, but fell 0-2 inside Brown Field. Aside from the 0-0 double-overtime draw with North Alabama in the Salukis' season opening weekend, tonight's match was the longest clean sheet for SIU thus far.
A scoreless first half, the Salukis saw four shots with three saves by junior keeper Maddy Alaluf in net. The midfield-heavy match up found five Salukis substituting in for the starting 11, including junior midfielder Sam DeJulio with her 11th start and ninth full 90 minute match.
SIU came into the attack, ranking in five more shots to the Beacons' net. With a heavy-blocking defense ran by DeJulio, junior Georgina Franco, and junior Katy Quinn, Valpo's Dana Fish found the net down the middle of the box off the foot of teammate Morgen Metgzer to bring points into play.
A penalty kick drawn by the Brown and Gold's Kelsie James at the 88:46 mark of the game, sealed the match up, 0-2. Leading the pack for the Salukis in her fifth start of the 2021 season was sophomore forward McKensey Bunch with three shots with one on-goal, followed closely behind junior forward Kaitlin DuCharme with two shots.
With a full weekend off from contests, the Salukis are back home at Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex to host the Drake Bulldogs (5-3-4) on Saturday, October 9 at 5:30pm.
