
Soccer Hosts Drake on Saturday

CARBONDALE, Ill. --Â After being on the road for the last three, SIU (0-10-1) will stay at home inside the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex to host Drake (5-4-4) Saturday evening at 5:30pm. In-game live stats are available here.
A Look at Last Game: With nine days off from contests, the Salukis last competed at Valparaiso, falling 0-2 inside Brown Field. Aside from the 0-0 double-overtime draw with North Alabama in the Salukis' season opening weekend, the match was the longest clean sheet for SIU thus far, holding the Beacons scoreless for 74 minutes. The Dawgs marked nine shots and nine saves in the match up.
So far in 2021: Southern Illinois opened up scoring in the 2-3 loss to Kansas City in their home opener, bringing in four shots-on-goal to SIU and fell starting last weekend to highly notarized Vanderbilt, 0-5 and losing 0-4 to Lipscomb on Sunday in another heavy-midfield match with keeper Ary Lougher earning her first collegiate start. On Thursday, SIU was upended by SIUE, 0-5. The last non-conference match at home, the Dawgs left answered, in a 0-2 loss to Bellarmine in midfield action. Starting conference, the Dawgs held Missouri State scoreless in the second half, but dropped 0-3 on Friday night in Carbondale. Hailey Blanchard scored the third goal of the Salukis' season, while SIU fell 1-3 to Murray State in their final non-conference game of 2021 on Sunday. Heading back into conference action, the Salukis scored for the second consecutive game at Illinois State, which resulted in a 1-2 fall. In the first of two mid-week Wednesday matches, the Salukis held Valpo scoreless for 74 minutes, in a 0-2 loss.
Scouting Drake: Posting a 2-4-2 record in the spring 2021 season, the Bulldogs earned wins against Illinois State and Evansville in the Valley, while racking in three goals cumulatively. Tabbed to finish seventh in the MVC coaches' preseason poll, Drake sees the return of senior midfielder Libby Helverson and sophomore forward Emma Nagel.Â
In Des Moines last spring, the Salukis and Bulldogs took their match scoreless into double-overtime, giving the Salukis their third draw of the year. Drake brought in 18 shots with three goalkeeper saves in the match up. The 5-4-4 2021 Bulldogs have garnered a 0-1-2 start into Valley play, drawing to Evansville and Indiana State -- both 1-1 -- and falling 1-4 to Loyola last week. Drake was most notarized this season for overthrowing #15Â Memphis, 2-0, at home in September.Â

Sophomore Ashlyn Henrie has shined in her second season with SIU so far, recording one goal and one assist in the three games. The Dawgs opened exhibition play on Wednesday, drawing 1-1 to Southeast Missouri, while falling to UIC 0-1 on Friday, and turning up another 1-1 draw to Belmont in exhibition. Four freshmen and seven of ten Saluki newcomers saw action in the preseason.
Up in the Ranks: Junior keeper Maddy Alaluf moved up to sixth in the Missouri Valley in saves per game (4.20), while sophomore forward Sam Dodd tops the Salukis with 14 shots and seven shots-on-goal, teammates junior forward Kaitlin DuCharme and freshman midfielder Ashley Scesniak follow suit with 13 and 12 shots. Scesniak, senior forward/midfielder Hailey Blanchard, junior forward Emma Spotak, and junior midfielder Quinn Parks all hold goals in the book.
