CARBONDALE, Ill. — Playing its third game in five days, Southern Illinois used a 17-2 second-half run to pull away from Indiana State for a 63-55 win on Wednesday night at the Banterra Center.
Trailing by five points with nine minutes remaining, the Salukis (10-8, 3-3) caught fire, burying 3-pointers on four-straight possessions — two each by Lance Jones and Steven Verplancken Jr. The final dagger in the 17-2 run was a long triple by Jones to put Southern up, 60-50, with 3:21 remaining.
"We're a good shooting team, and we haven't had a lot of runs like that, but I think we're capable of making three or four threes in a row," said SIU head coach Bryan Mullins.
Jones led Southern with 14 points and made four 3-pointers. Verplancken Jr. finished with 12 points and had an electric streak of three-straight buckets during one stretch of the first half.
After connecting on just 3-of-14 from long range in the first half, the Salukis made 7-of-14 in the second half, including a heat-check burst of five out of six.
"It was like a domino effect and everybody started chipping in," Jones said.
After scoring 30 points versus Drake, SIU's bench contributed 21 more points tonight, as the team's 10-deep rotation is paying dividends. Dalton Banks, who is shooting nearly 70 percent from the field in the last seven games, scored 11 points and dished a team-high four assists. He attacked the basket, scoring all of his points from inside the arc.
"Dalton came in determined," Jones said. "He got downhill immediately. I felt like he had a mismatch on the offensive end and he attacked it. When he got to the paint he made the right decisions."
Southern's defense held the Sycamores (8-9, 1-4) to just 24 second-half points and 9-of-27 shooting from the field. Cooper Neese, ISU's leading scorer, played all 40 minutes, but was limited to just six points on 2-of-5 from 3-point.
Although winter weather outside kept some fans at home, the 4,142 who made it were entertained in the second half and roared their approval with chants of "SIU, SIU."
"Our fans are amazing," Banks said. "We played a couple of road games in the Valley and it doesn't even compare."
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Southern and evened it's conference record at 3-3. The Salukis play their next two games at Bradley and Loyola.
"We have 15 guys in that locker room that care about SIU Basketball and want to win a championship," Mullins said. "We have 10 guys playing in the rotation right now and we're going to need everyone. The Valley is such a grind. You see all the close scores. It's going to be somebody else's opportunity on Saturday night (at Bradley)."
