LOUISVILLE, KY – The Southern Illinois University track and field program wrapped up its second road weekend of the indoor season on Saturday. The teams competed in a split meet format by attending the Indiana Relays and the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational.
"I thought both groups handled the weekend extremely well," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Rosalind Joseph. "Coming off last weekend we really had to shake some dust off and get back to competing with some urgency. I think all event groups did that well this weekend."
The Saluki throwers got the weekend started by competing on Friday evening in Bloomington, Ind. Elisia Lancaster was able to find the podium for third consecutive meet in the women's weight throw. Her mark of 71'8.75" (21.86m) came on her first throw, and was good enough to secure 3rd place in the event for the Salukis.
The action continued on Saturday morning in Bloomington. Kayla Schiera ran a personal best time of 9:42.77 in the 3000m. Her time ranks second all-time in SIU history, just .07 shy of the record held by Vivian Sinou since 1988. A'veun Moore-Jones continued her strong start to the indoor season with a second place spot in the women's shot put, making it her third meet in a row where she has found the podium. Her final toss of the finals registered in at 55'5.75" (16.91m). That mark was an indoor personal best for Moore-Jones, and places her 4th all-time in record books. Continuing the success in the field events, Cole Taggart finished 3rd in the men's shot put with his mark of 53'9.25" (16.39m). Taggart has now put up back-to-back 3rd place finishes in as many weeks.
Just 2 hours away in Louisville, Ky., the sprinters and jumpers for Southern Illinois competed in the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational. Savannah Long got 5th in the 60m hurdles, running a personal best of 8.72. That time places Long top-10 in school history for the event. Iaunia Pointer followed that up with a 2nd place finish in the 60m dash (7.53). Darrione Williams placed 5th in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.06m. That mark was good for a personal best for Williams.
The biggest win of the day came in the women's 200m dash. Sophomore Iaunia Pointer set a facility record, and ran a personal best of 23.90 to secure 1st place for the Salukis. That's her second win of the season in the 200m event.
"I like the fight in our team. They support one another, they push one another, and so I like that when one of us is down, we don't all stay down for long. The support helps us not be intimidated by our competition. Shout out to my staff who have spent many sleepless nights, like most coaches I'm sure, working tirelessly just preparing our team to compete well," said Joseph. "We're less than 30 days away from conference championships!"
The Salukis continue their indoor season next weekend when they host the Don DeNoon Invitiational at the SIU Recreation Center.
