Jake Brydson Named to Track & Field Coaching Staff

Brydson joins SIU after previously serving as an assistant coach at Missouri State.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Jake Brydson has been named an Assistant Coach for the Southern Illinois Track and Field program, Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Richard Jones announced today. Brydson is the third addition to the track and field coaching staff and will oversee jumps. Brydson previously served as a track and field assistant coach at Missouri State, a position he held from 2018-2022. Before joining the Bears, Brydson spent one season at the University of Oklahoma where was a volunteer assistant coach that helped with vertical jumps, multi-events and hurdles.
"Joining Coach Jones' staff and this program is truly an honor," said Brydson. "The trophies and accolades speak for themselves. After learning more about this program and university, I understand how they were earned in the past. I hope that under Coach Jones' leadership we can continue the Saluki tradition. I'm incredibly excited to be a part of that pursuit."
At Missouri State, Brydson coached five Missouri Valley Conference champions, and six runners-up. He had three NCAA First Round Qualifiers and guided 15 student-athletes to the podium at the MVC Championships. Brydson's training group included all hurdlers, jumpers, throwers, and combined events. In 2022, his group went 1, 2, 5 at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in women's javelin.
With Oklahoma, Brydson assisted with the daily operations and coaching of vertical jumps, men's hurdles, and combined events. Vernon Turner jumped 2.33 meters, the top freshman mark, and was #4 NCAA Indoor All-Time. Brydson was also part of two Big 12 individual champions in the 60m hurdles and outdoor high jump while at Oklahoma.
From 2014-17, Brydson was a coach at Westlake High School in Saratoga Springs, Utah. There, he coached multiple athletes to the Utah 5A State Finals.
Brydson graduated from Utah Valley University in the spring of 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in accounting. He was a part of three school record relays (4x1 and indoor/outdoor 4x4) and five team championships. As a senior in 2013, Brydson had top 10 finishes at the GWC Indoor Championships in both the 200m and long jump. During the outdoor season, Brydson won the 4x100m relay while also placing top 10 in the 4x400, 200m, and 400m at the GWC Outdoor Championships. Throughout his career, Brydson had consistently finished top three in events such as the 4x400, 200m, 4x100, and jump events, leading to a successful career as a collegiate athlete.
Brydson has coaching education certifications through the USTFCCCA Academy and is endorsed in Horizontal Jumps, High Jump, Jumping and Combined Events Specialist. He also has his ALTIS Certifications in Sprint Hurdles, Horizontal Jumps, High Jump, and Shot Put/Discus courses. In addition, he has been published in Techniques Magazine (February 2020) High Jump: A 3-D Technical Model and Practical Application.
