CARBONDALE, Ill. — Looking for its fifth-straight win, No. 16-ranked Southern Illinois hosts Western Illinois on Homecoming on Saturday at 2 p.m. The contest features a pregame flyover of Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft during the national anthem, and a chance to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for "Breaking Cans."
The Salukis (4-2, 3-0) are tied with North Dakota State and South Dakota State atop the Missouri Valley Football Conference standings. A win over the Leathernecks (0-5, 0-3) would give SIU a five-game winning streak, matching the longest streak during the Nick Hill era, accomplished during both the 2019 and 2021 seasons.
The pregame flyover will take place during the National Anthem at approximately 1:50 p.m. Both A-10 pilots are graduates of SIU's Aviation program. The lead pilot is Class of 1999 alumnus Joshua Rose, who is currently a Southwest Airlines pilot and Air National Guard Lieutenant Colonel out of the 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The second pilot is Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Shriver, who graduated in 2003 from SIU's Aviation Management Program.
Pepsi MidAmerica and Saluki Athletics are teaming up to attempt to set a new world record for "Breaking Cans" during Saturday's game. Every fan will receive a 7UP can when they enter the stadium. At the end of the first quarter, fans will be directed to simultaneously crack open their cans. A Guinness World Record representative will be on-site to confirm the record.
