The Southern Illinois volleyball team defeated Belmont in four-sets (25-21, 31-33, 25-23, 25-20) Friday night to kickoff a five-match home stand for the Salukis. Southern has won three matches in a row with the win and improves to 12-7 (5-2 MVC) on the year.
Belmont got out to an early 5-0 lead in the first set but SIU was able to claw its way back and bring themselves within a point at 5-6. The set continued to go back-and-forth until the Salukis were able to score five-straight points and jump out to a 23-18 lead with Kelly Franklin at the service line. Franklin finished the night with a career-high four aces, including her first of the night that rallied the Salukis in a win in the first frame.Â
Southern led for much of the second set but a late run from the Bruins gave Belmont a 25-24 lead. Both teams continued to trade points until Belmont eventually was able to gain enough momentum to pull away. The Salukis fell 33-31 in the second, making it the longest frame of the season for the Salukis.
From there, SIU was able to bounce back and take the final two sets behind a pair of strong performances by outside hitters Nataly Garcia and Tatum Tornatta. Garica led the Salukis with 22 kills, and has now totaled 20 plus kills in four of the Salukis' seven Valley matches this year. Tornatta finished the match with 16 kills as well as an ace and three blocks. Freshmen Annabelle Sulish played a key role while recording a new season-high nine kills to go along with a pair of aces and 10 digs. Â
Valley leader in assists per set (11.25) Anna Jaworski, tallied a game-high 54 assists while facilitating the Salukis offense. As well as leading the Valley, Jaworski currently averages the sixth most assists per set in the country after Friday's match.Â
The Salukis return to Davies Gym Saturday, Oct. 15 for a 5 p.m. start against the Murray State Racers.Â
