The Southern Illinois volleyball team extended its winning-streak to five consecutive matches with a sweep (25-22, 25-17, 25-23) over Missouri State. The Salukis move to 14-7 (7-2 MVC) on the season and are currently tied for second-place in the Valley.
Not only have the Salukis won their last five matches, but they've swept three of the last five and have won their last eight sets going back to the third set against Belmont on Friday, Oct. 14. It's the team's longest winning-streak under head coach Ed Allen in his fourth season.
The Salukis got off to a slow start in the first set unlike their previous four wins but we're able to fight their way back and take a 16-14 lead after going down 0-4 early. Kelly Franklin sparked the rally with three consecutive aces for SIU. Franklin gave Southern a big boost at the service line, finishing a career-high six aces in the sweep.
The second frame was all SIU as it hit for a .483 rate, finishing with 18 kills on just 29 attempts in the set. Five different Salukis recorded a kill in the second set while Franklin recorded three more aces in the frame.Â
SIU needed another comeback in the third and final set falling behind 23-21 late. After a timeout from Coach Allen, the Salukis would come back out to score the next four points and take the match from the Bears. The final four points were all scored by Tatum Tornatta as she went for three kills and an ace to lead the Salukis comeback.Â
Anna Jaworski continued to increase her Valley-leading assists-per-set average as she finished with 46  (15.33 per set). Â
Three Salukis finished with double-digit kills as Nataly Garcia led with 14. Tornatta (13) and Annabelle Sulish (11) were just behind Garcia as all three have had 10 or more kills in two consecutive matches.Â
Imani Hartfield and Brinley Burdette both hit at very efficient rates and scored timely points for the Salukis. The freshmen Burdette recorded six kills at a .500 rate, the most kills in a Valley contest in her first nine matches. Hartfield, who leads the Valley with a .383 hitting percentage, hit a season-high .583 with eight kills.Â
Freshman Claudia Bobb had 20 digs (6.67 per set) to lead the Salukis defensivley. She's now had five matches with 20 or more digs.Â
SIU stays at home as they get set to host IUC Friday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. followed by a visit from Valparaiso Saturday, Oct. 21Â with first serve set for 5 p.m.
