The Southern Illinois volleyball team took down the Indiana State Sycamores in four sets (25-17, 25-22, 27-29, 25-18) for its second consecutive Valley win. The Salukis move to 11-7 (4-2 MVC) on the season.
Much like Friday's match at Evansville, SIU got out to another 5-0 lead early in the first set and would go on to lead for the entirety of the frame. Indiana State made a run and brought itself within two at 18-16 but a 7-1 Saluki run ended the frame and put SIU up 1-0.
The Sycamores jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second and the rest of the frame was a game of runs between the two teams. SIU went on its longest run of the match midway through the frame, scoring seven straight points and taking a 15-11 lead that would be quickly wiped away as Indiana State would score the next five points to take a slight lead. The Salukis were able to outlast the Sycamores in the frame however thanks to three straight kills from Nataly Garcia to put SIU up 24-21 down the stretch.Â
Despite dropping the third 27-29, the Salukis recorded a .340 hitting percentage during the game, their highest in any four frames on the night. However Indiana State hit an impressive .396 in the third to help outlast SIU.
The Salukis went right to work in the fourth game and found themselves up 17-8, their largest lead of the night. Indiana State tried to make a run but were held off and Southern put the Sycamores away 25-18.Â
Anna Jaworski recorded a season-high 65Â assists in the win for the Salukis as well as leading SIU with 26 digs marking another season-high. The sophomore setter also tied her career-high with three service aces, as she currently leads the team with 22 through the first 18 matches.Â
Nataly Garcia and Tatum Tornatta were on the receiving end of many of Jaworski's assists as the two outside hitters each recorded new season-highs. Garcia led the Salukis as she tallied 26 kills with Tornatta right behind her totaling 19 in the win. The pair also was very active on the defensive end helping the Salukis record 8 blocks on the night including a solo from Tornatta and a solo from Brinley Burdette.Â
Southern will return home next weekend as it hosts Belmont Friday, Oct. 14 with first serve set for 6 p.m. followed by a matchup with Murray State on Saturday at 5 p.m. Both matches will be played inside Davies Gym.Â
