Domask Named to All-Tournament Team
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. – It took overtime and a career-high 32 points from senior Marcus Domask, but Southern Illinois basketball returns to Carbondale with a third-place finish in the SoCal Challenge after defeating Cal Baptist 64-61 early Thursday morning at JSerra Pavilion.
After a Trent Brown steal, Domask nailed his 31st and 32nd point at the charity stripe with 11 seconds left in overtime and like it had all game, the Saluki defense did its job against the Lancers with the game coming to a close at 12:25 a.m. on the west coast.
For his effort in the two games at the SoCal Challenge, Domask was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Waupun, Wisconsin native averaged 26.5 points on 61.3 percent (19-of-31) shooting, 6.5 rebounds, three assists and 1.5 blocks per game.
After Cal Baptist (3-3) scored the first four points of overtime to jump ahead 61-57 with 3:44 left in action, the Salukis did not surrender another point to CBU for the remainder of the game while Domask took over scoring the next seven points to secure the victory.
In what was a back-and-forth first half of action, the Salukis (4-2) used the three to keep pace with the Lancers. Off the bench, Foster Wonders dropped in two of Southern's six first-half triples. The Salukis exploded for a 7-0 run to end the half to take a 33-26 lead into the locker room. Domask had a game-high 11 points in the first half of play, playing all but a minute.
Similar to the previous game with UNLV, Southern struggled shooting the ball in the second half hitting just 8-of-22 from the floor and 1-for-7 from behind the arc. After entering the game in the second half, Cade Hornecker made his presence known picking up a driving dunk to break a scoring drought and later hitting a baseline jumper at the 10-minute mark to give the Salukis a four-point lead.
It was Domask that would be the difference as he hit five of Southern's eight field goals in the second half to will the Salukis down the stretch.
SIU took a three-point lead with 28 seconds left after Clarence Rupert hit a tough shot in the paint before missing the free throw to follow. CBU's Joe Quintana would answer on the other end connecting on a 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
It was all hands on deck defensively for SIU as Cal Baptist's top scorer and pro prospect Taran Armstrong was held to just 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting, including 0-for-3 from deep.
Cal Baptist took advantage of a smaller Saluki lineup for much of the game, winning the rebounding battle 45-32, including a 15-2 difference in offensive rebounds. CBU was able to convert the extra opportunities into 17 points to SIU's two to fuel a second-half comeback.
Rupert joined Domask in double-figures with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. It was the highest-scoring output for the transfer in his SIU career. Lance Jones finished with five points and three steals in the win.
