CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois men's basketball played its most complete game of the season Tuesday night at Banterra Center, defeating Lincoln (Mo.) 88-51. The Salukis scored a season-high 50 points in the second half and were led by a trio of double-digit scorers.
"I'm proud of our guys. I thought they came out with the right mindset for a full 40 minutes," head coach Bryan Mullins said. "In terms of how we played, they shared the ball, they did a pretty good job of keeping the ball out of the paint and overall, everyone that played contributed and impacted winning."
Lincoln (5-2) scored the first basket of the game before Rupert put the Salukis in the driver's seat for the remainder of the game scoring the first four points for SIU.
"For us, it's about continuing to get better. That was our challenge to the guys the last 48 hours," Mullins noted. "It was good leadership (from the seniors) by being ready to go from the start."
Twelve players scored in the game for Southern in a balanced effort. Marcus Domask and Lance Jones led all scorers with 17 points apiece. Domask was efficient on the floor, scoring on eight of his 11 field goal attempts while Jones was lethal from deep shooting 5-for-7 from behind the arc, including spearheading a 20-0 run in the second half of play. Forward Clarence Rupert was strong once again for SIU, scoring 12 points on 6-for-6 shooting.
Jones also dished out a team high eight assists while the Salukis tallied 25 in the game.
Germantown, Md. native, Xavier Johnson led all rebounders with eight to go with eight assists and six points. Foster Wonders connected on a pair of triples and finished with eight points while Dalton Banks added eight points and two assists for SIU.
Southern Illinois (7-4) made its presence known in the paint, outscoring Lincoln 46-20 near the basket while outrebounding the Blue Tigers 31-18.
The Salukis finished the game shooting 63.2 percent (36-57) from the field and 47.8 percent (11-23) from distance. The SIU defense was strong throughout, holding LU's top scorer Artese Stapleton, to just 4-for-10 shooting while holding Lincoln to just 41.3 percent from the field.
