MURRAY, Ky. – Southern Illinois men's basketball won its fifth-straight game Thursday night with a 63-57 victory on the road against Murray State. Led by Marcus Domask and Lance Jones, the Salukis snapped the Racers' 20-game homecourt streak inside the CFSB Center -- the seventh-longest streak in the nation entering play -- to pick up their second Missouri Valley Conference win of the season.
Domask put together a 20-point, 11 rebound and six assist game to lead the Salukis – his second double-double of the season while Lance Jones had a team-high 21 points, including four assists, three rebounds and a trio of 3-pointers.
Forward Clarence Rupert gave the Salukis a shot in the arm early in the second half, scoring six points on 3-for-4 shooting down low en route to a 10-point outing.
Southern Illinois (10-4, 2-1 MVC) put together one of its strongest games of the season taking care of the basketball, only turning the ball over just four times during the game, including just one miscue in the second half. SIU assisted on 16 of their 24 made baskets.
Though the Salukis did not shoot the ball well, they were able to put together a strong defensive game as well as make adjustments in the second half to outrebound the Racers on the offensive end 5-0 leading to seven second-chance points. MSU dominated the rebounds in the first half, corralling 24 rebounds to Southern's 13.
The Salukis were strong on the defensive side of the ball from the start, not allowing a field goal to the Racers until the 13-minute mark of the first half.
Murray State (7-6, 2-1 MVC) reeled off a 9-0 run and held the Salukis scoreless for nearly eight minutes before Lance Jones broke the drought with a layup and Foster Wonders knocked down a 3-pointer on the next possession off the bench. The Salukis scored six of the final eight points of the half to take a 26-23-point lead into the locker room.
It was a similar start in the second half as Southern reeled off six straight points in the opening two minutes before both teams settled in once more. Rob Perry put the Racers on top 39-38 with 11:12 remaining before the Salukis regained the lead for good thanks in part to an 8-0 outburst kickstarted by a layup from Jawaun Newton.
Murray State pulled to within three points with 3:32 left to play before Southern picked up key baskets from Domask and Jones as the duo would score the final 20 points over the final nine minutes of the game.
Perry led all scorers with 26 points on 11-for-17 shooting while Kenny White Jr. added 13 points for the Racers.
