CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Salukis have brought the most team collective points at the MAC Championships since joining the conference in 2009. Last year in Oxford, Ohio, the Salukis posted a final standing in third place with 588.5 points in the MAC. SIU took home three first place results, while posting three swimmers as First-Team All-MAC in 2021: Adam Cernek, Donat Csuvarszki, and Zander Minano.
TOP DAWGS
The Salukis saw numerous outstanding performances and career bests all season from the seasoned team. A battle in the freestyle, 10 different SIU men hold a top-five time in the events, ranging from 50-free to 1650-free. Sophomore Gustav Persson holds steady in the breaststroke, surpassing his best times in the 100- and 200- from a year ago. Newcomer Selim Hassan has shown growth in the water, placing top-five times in the 200- and 400-IM, while clocking in at a Saluki season best in the 200-fly. Junior Ian Marshall has been swimming the distance, earning his new personal bests in the 1000- and 1650-freestyle events.
Donat Csuvarszki
WEEKLY HONORS
Bouncing back from a season off of swimming, junior distancer Ian Marshall was named the MAC Swimmer of the Week on November 11. Marshall made a splash in the Salukis' first place title in the A3 Performance Invitational over the weekend. The Nashville native garnered a lifetime best and first place finish in the 400-IM (3:56.85), while also going to pace in the 1650-free "mile", clocking in at 15:51.53 for a first place title.
BREAKING RECORDS
In November, the Saluki men overthrew the longest standing men's relay record at SIU since the 2011-12 season by .61. The quartet of Alex Schleuter, Zander Minano, Zheng Yang Yeap, and Donat Csuvarszki clocked in at 1:19.60 to earn a spot on the wall in the 200-free relay. Breaking the school and pool record last held since 2015, Hungarian sophomore Donat Csuvarszki also found the top spot in the 100-free, clocking in at 43.58 and earning an NCAA "B" cut at the A3 Performance Invitational.
AGAINST THE MAC
The men's team finished 2-1 against MAC competition during the regular season. After upending the Bears last season, the Salukis fell short to Missouri State in the pool in October. Holding the 2-1 in non-conference (Mizzou, Henderson State, Eastern Illinois), SIU dominated in the water up against Evansville and new MAC member, Valparaiso at the A3 Performance Invitational in November.
