BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior thrower A'veun Moore-Jones earned First-Team All-American honors with her 8th-place finish in the women's shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday.
Moore-Jones posted her best throw of 17.19m (56' 4.75") on her third attempt, which advanced her to the event finals. Her 17.19m mark was good enough to withstand the other competitiors, ultimately securing her the 8th place finish overall. This is the second consecutive year that A'veun has earned indoor All-American honors; she placed 14th one year ago earning her Second-Team All-American.
"I am very proud of A'veun," said SIU throws coach J.C. Lambert. "She fought through some adversity this week, competed strong, and came through whenever it matter most. She has grown a lot, not only as an athlete, but as a person over the past year and today showed."
Moore-Jones started the competition with a toss of 15.77m (51' 9"), which was the 11th best mark through the first round. Her third round and best overall mark advanced to her to the finals of the competition. Including that mark, Moore-Jones was able to string together four straight rounds of 17.0m plus distances. In the finals, the Mount Vernon, Ill., native was able to start with a mark of 17.18m (56' 4.5"). Her fifth and sixth round marks then registered in at 17.06m and 17.17m.
"She had a great indoor season this year, she made some great breakthroughs and came in clutch a lot of times when needed. Being First-Team All-American is tough to do, NCAA points are tough to come by no matter how many," said Lambert.
Arizona State's Jorinde Van Klinken was able to win gold with a personal best mark of 19.08m (63' 7.25"). Ohio State's Adeliaida Aquilla took home silver in the event after winning the title one year ago (17.95m | 58' 10.75").
Moore-Jones became the 82nd Indoor First-Team All-American in SIU history, and the most recent after teammate Shauniece O'Neal garnered the same status in the weigh throw at last years 2021 NCAA Championships. On Friday night, Shauniece O'Neal and Elisia Lancaster both took home second-team All-American honors in the women's weight throw. O'Neal finished in 9th, while Lancaster finished right behind her Saluki teammate in 10th.
"Now it's officially on to Outdoor season and I'm excited to see what the ladies can do and what the season will bring!"
