ST. LOUIS, Mo. — During the final two minutes of the first half, Drake broke open a tight game and went on to claim a 65-52 win over Southern Illinois in the quarterfinals of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Friday night.
The Salukis (16-14) had built a seven-point lead, 24-17, and three of Drake's top players were in foul trouble with two each for Tremell Murphy, plus All-Conference players Tucker DeVries and Garrett Sturtz.
The Bulldogs (23-9) overcame those obstacles, closing the first half on an 11-2 run to grab a 28-26 halftime lead. They continued the momentum into the second half, when Drake surged to a double-digit lead, 43-33. Forward ShanQuan Hemphill scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half, and DeVries (13 points) and Penn (13 points) both did most of their scoring damage in the final 20 minutes.
"Give Drake credit," said SIU head coach Bryan Mullins. "They made some tough shots, DeVries making some fadeaways, Penn making some fadeaways. Obviously, Hemphill was a difference-maker tonight for them."
A hot-shooting team throughout the month of February, Southern was uncharacteristically cold from 3-point range this evening, converting 4-of-26. Lance Jones hit a triple on SIU's first possession, but the Salukis missed 15 of their next 16 from long distance.
"We didn't shoot the ball well," Mullins acknowledged. "Give credit to Drake, but I also thought we had some good shots that normally our guys make, and the ball didn't fall for us."
Marcus Domask led SIU with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists. A second-team All-Conference honoree, Domask made 7-of-13 shots and drew seven fouls.
"Looking around the locker room, a lot of guys were really frustrated, tears in the locker room," said Domask. "I feel the message is, we're close, and hopefully this sticks with us and it just fuels us every day."
Jones chipped in 15 points for SIU on 6-of-15 shooting and was 3-of-10 from long range.
"Use (the loss) as motivation," Jones said. "We're a really good team. We've shown that throughout the Valley season. It just comes down to sticking together and playing hard together. I feel if we do that this off-season, we'll be dominant (next year)."
