The Southern Illinois University baseball team snapped SEMO's 17-game home win streak with a gritty 3-2 win over the Redhawks Tuesday night at Capaha Field.
The Salukis, winners of four of their last five, scored a run in three of the first four innings and used stellar pitching performances from Jake Combs, Jordan Gould and Matthew Steidl to make their three early inning runs stand up. In doing so, Southern brought to an end the nation's second-longest home win streak and handed the Redhawks their first loss at home since May 21, 2021.
Combs got the start and threw four solid innings. He allowed just two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts before handing the ball off to Gould. Gould earned the win and improved to 3-0 on the season after he threw an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief. He allowed three hits and struck out one. Steidl came on in relief of Gould and allowed just two hits in three and a third innings to notch his third save of the season. He also struck out six without issuing a walk.
Southern scratched across a run in the top of the first. A hit and two walks set the table for Nathan Bandy, who beat out a potential double play ball to push across a run.
The Salukis doubled their lead in the the top of the second on Ryan Rodriguez's fourth home run of the season.
After the Redhawks used a pair of hits to manufacture a run in the home-half of the second, SIU used another long ball to move its lead back to two in the fourth. Nick Hagedorn connected on his sixth home run of the season to put Southern ahead 3-1.
A Redhawk homer to leadoff the bottom of the fifth chased SIU starting pitcher Jake Combs after four strong innings. Gould got Southern out of the fifth but ran into trouble in the sixth after he surrendered back-to-back two-out singles. Steidl answered the call and struck out the lone batter he faced in the frame to get Southern out of it.
Steidl ran into a little trouble in the seventh, as SEMO again used back-to-back two-out singles to put runners on the corner. But the Gallatin, Tenn. native retired the next seven batters he faced to seal the win for the Salukis.
Southern's win over SEMO gives the Salukis its first quadrant one win of the 2022 season. The Redhawks, who won the OVC Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament a year ago, came into the contest with the No. 39 RPI.
The Salukis are back in action starting Thursday when they host Siena. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Southern will take on the Saints again on Friday at 6 p.m. before concluding its weekend against SIUE on Saturday at 4 p.m.
