
Moore-Jones named All-American, three other Salukis earn Honorable Mention

EUGENE, Ore. - A'veun Moore-Jones earned First Team All-American honors for her seventh place finish in the shot put on Thursday night at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Shauniece O'Neal (hammer throw), Elisia Lancaster (hammer throw), and Kayla Schiera (3000m steeplechase) all earned Honorable Mention All-American status for their placement earlier in the evening. O'Neal finished 17th, Lancaster 20th, and Schiera placed 22nd overall.

A'veun Moore-Jones earned the fourth All-American honor of her career after she notched a new personal best in the shot put. Her first throw of the event was a PR at 17.43m (57' 2.25").  Her second attempt traveled 17.31m (56' 9.50"). After three rounds, Moore-Jones found herself in seventh place which advanced her to the finals. She fouled on attempts four and five, but was able mark on her sixth attempt. That mark was another new personal best, this one measuring in at 17.63m (57' 10.25"). That distance is the fourth-best mark in school history.

Shauniece O'Neal's Honorable Mention status was the fifth time in her career that she has captured All-American honors. O'Neal marked at 64.83m (212' 8") on her first throw of the competition. After fouling on her second attempt, her third came up just short of her initial heave at 64.47m (212' 2"). O'Neal found herself in seventh place after flight one, but would ultimately land in 17th after the conclusion of flight two.

This was the second All-American honor for Lancaster as she previously earned Second Team All-American at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships. Lancaster fouled on her first attempt of the competition after being the third athlete out of the gate in flight one. Her second toss measured in at 62.08m (203' 8"). Her third and final throw of the event was her longest, marking at 64.30m (210' 7").Â

Schiera's Honorable Mention was the first All-American honor of her career. She finished the steeplechase event in 10:29.58 to finish 10th in heat one and 22nd overall. Schiera capped off a memorable final season in the Maroon and White in which she set school records in the 3000m Steeplechase, outdoor 5000m, indoor 5000m, and the indoor 3000m. Â
