CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team fell by a final score of 2-0 in its home opener against Lindenwood Thursday night at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex.
"I felt we started off relatively well, and then we had a breakdown for about 15 to 20 minutes," head coach Craig Roberts said. "Then I felt we burst back up again in the last 15 minutes so you look at 60 minutes of the game where I felt positive that we did well."
The Salukis out-shot Lindenwood 10-5 overall and 7-3 in the second half, but the Lions were able to push two goals through in the second half of action. Graduate student Hailey Blanchard led the way for the Salukis with two shots on goal.
The go-ahead goal came from Rachel Jackson in the 54th minute of play off of a corner kick before LU added an insurance goal six minutes later from Mia Corrigan.
"Our focus has got to be on taking the positives out of each game," Roberts said. "For 60 or 70 minutes of this game, we took a lot of positives out of the game and what we're going to do now is dissect the last 30 minutes and just make sure that we correct those mistakes."
Southern Illinois will embark on a two-game road trip starting on Sunday, Aug. 21, at Bellarmine at 2 p.m. in Louisville, Ky.Â
