COLUMBIA, Mo. - Alyssa Fallon found the back-of-the-net Thursday but it wasn't enough as Southern Illinois fell 3-1 to Missouri.
"We knew it was going to be a challenge for us, but I think the girls met the challenge," head coach Craig Roberts said. "We are immensely proud of their efforts. Tonight, I felt that we really grew from the experience."
The Tigers (2-1-0) scored the match's opening goal within the first two minutes, with Grace Pettet putting the Tigers up 1-0. The Salukis would answer back minutes later with Fallon scoring her first goal of the season off of a Christy Murauskis assist after a corner at the nine-minute mark.
Fallon's goal was Southern Illinois' first against a Power 5 school in program history.
"I was delighted for her," Roberts said. "She's been working really hard in practice and has been well-deserving of that, and showed why she deserved to start today."
Missouri would add on two more goals in the next 10 minutes, with the first being scored by Leah Selm and the second by Hannah Boughton. All three of Missouri's goals were off of set pieces.
Southern Illinois generated 11 shots in the match, including seven in the second half. Goalkeeper Maddy Alaluf made four saves in the loss.
The Salukis (0-2-0) will head home for their next three matches, starting on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. vs. Alabama A&M at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex.
