SIU moves to 4-1 on the road in the MVC.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Southern Illinois men's basketball defeated Missouri State on the road Saturday, 61-57, at Great Southern Bank Arena – winning its fourth-straight and improving to 16-5 on the year and 8-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Salukis led wire-to-wire, but Missouri State made things interesting late, cutting the Southern Illinois lead to just two points with under a minute remaining to play at 59-57. Graduate guard Xavier Johnson dribbled down the clock and knocked down a step-back jumper to the game away for SIU.
It was an all-around effort for the Salukis as four players scored in double-digits led by Lance Jones' 11 points. Marcus Domask, Jawaun Newton, and Johnson each tallied 10 points for the Dawgs.
The Salukis shot 10-for-26 (38.5) from behind the arc against the Bears with six different players draining shots. Jones tallied a trio of threes while Johnson and Newton dropped in two 3-pointers in the win.
Senior big man JD Muila was strong for SIU in the win, scoring a season-high eight and leading the team with eight rebounds.
Needing just a pair of rebounds entering the game, Domask joined three Saluki Hall of Famers in Wayne Abrams, Darren Brooks, and Marcus Timmons as the only players in program history to surpass 1,400 points, 500 rebounds, and 300 assists.
Southern took a 30-25 lead into the locker room after shooting 43 percent from the field and holding the Bears scoreless for the final two minutes of the period. Guard Jawauan Newton led the way with eight first-half points while JD Muila scored six and Lance Jones dropped in five points.
