CARBONDALE, Ill. - On Thursday night at the Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex, the Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (1-8-4) were shut-out by Belmont, 1-0.
"Fair play to Belmont, they showed a lot of quality," head coach Graeme Orr said. "I thought there were a lot of positives from our performance. We defended the transition a lot better tonight than we have previously. I just felt that we failed to secure the ball a number of times to mount a lot of possession."
It was a scoreless first half between the two sides, with Belmont posting six shots while Southern Illinois had four. Both goalkeepers got off to strong starts, with both having multiple saves each in the opening 45 minutes. SIU's Chantelle Symes had a pair of saves within 30 seconds of one another, and finished the half with three total.Â
On the other side, Belmont's Sarah Doyle also had three saves in the first half. Dana Cruz, McKensey Bunch, and Emma Spotak all had one shot-on-goal.
Into the second half, the Bruins were able to get on the board in the 55th minute through Anna Sweeney off of a Kennedy Wise assist. This was the game-winning goal in a 1-0 Bruins victory.
The Salukis had eight shots total, with five of them being on target. Freshman defender Molly Tapak's two shots-on-goal led the team on the night.
Symes ended the match with four saves for the Salukis.
Southern Illinois, now 1-8-4 overall and 0-5-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play, will stay at home for Senior Day on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Indiana State.
"We need to be professional and bring a lot of energy, and make sure we sacrifice for them for what they've done for the program over the last four years," Orr said.Â
