CARBONDALE, Ill. - Despite having numerous chances throughout the match, the Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (1-8-5) drew to Indiana State, 0-0, on Senior Day on Sunday.
"We put in a great performance for the seniors," head coach Graeme Orr said. "The application and dedication was there, and that's what those ones (seniors) have been showing for the entire three to four years and will continue to do that until the final game of the season."
In the first half, SIU out-shot Indiana State, 6-1. One of the seniors honored prior to the game, McKensey Bunch, had the Salukis' first real chance of the match in the 10th minute. Bunch found room and laced a shot directly on goal, which was saved by Indiana State's goalkeeper Maddie Alexander.Â
Bunch's shot was the lone shot-on-goal for either team in the opening half.
Emma Spotak got the Salukis started in the second half, firing a shot on target in the first six minutes of the second half, which was again saved by Alexander.Â
In the 64th minute, Kaitlin DuCharme had a chance off of a free kick, which was saved as it was heading for the center of the net.
Overall, the Salukis had 18 shots compared to three for Indiana State. Five of those 18 shots were on target, while the Sycamores registered zero shots-on-goal.
Southern Illinois, now 1-8-5 overall and 0-5-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play, will play its final home match of the season on Thursday against Valparaiso in the Playing with Pride Game at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex.Â
"It's important that we're inclusive and open to everybody, and give everybody an opportunity to enjoy this beautiful game and we look forward to celebrating that," Orr said.Â
