CARBONDALE, Ill. - Kaitlin DuCharme scored her third goal of the season on Thursday night as the Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (1-9-5) fell to Valparaiso, 2-1, in the final home game of the season.
The Beacons got on the board early, scoring in the 16th minute after Chase Ray found the back-of-the-net off of a Sam Gountounas assist.Â
Valpo out-shot SIU, 7-4, in the first half. Southern had a pair of shots-on-goal, with Sam Dodd trying a long ranged effort in the 19th minute and Brooklyn Maier tallying one in the 42nd minute. Both shots were saved by Beacons' goalkeeper Nikki Coryell.Â
Addy Joiner doubled Valparaiso's lead in the 53rd minute. SIU's Chantelle Symes made a save on a Molly O'Rear shot, but the rebound fell to Joiner who slotted it away to put the Beacons up 2-0.
The Salukis were able to cut Valpo's advantage in half in the 76th minute, when DuCharme scored after a McKinley Stiff free kick and assist. The goal was the graduate student's seventh as a Saluki, tying her with Emma Spotak for the second most all-time in program history.
Despite the goal, SIU was unable to complete the comeback, falling by a final score of 2-1.
Southern Illinois out-shot Valparaiso, 15-12, overall and had six shots-on-goal compared to the Beacons' five. Symes made three saves for the Salukis in the match.
SIU, now 1-9-5 overall and 0-6-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play, will head out on the road for its final two matches of the season. On Sunday, the Salukis visit Murray State at 1 p.m., and then travel to Missouri State on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. to conclude the season.Â
