
Women's Basketball Suffers Overtime Loss to Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (1-2) took the loss on Wednesday night in overtime to Purdue Fort Wayne, 70-64, at home.
"We probably played the best defensive quarter of the season in the second quarter," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "They turned it around in the fourth quarter and we flipped it."
The Salukis were out-scored in the fourth, 15-6, to force overtime. In the second, it was the other way around, with SIU out-scoring the Mastodons, 15-6.
Purdue Fort Wayne led at the end of the first quarter, 12-11, in a low-scoring affair. At one point, the Mastodons had a 10-2 lead within the opening 10 minutes.
At the end of the first half, the Salukis led, 26-18, after the strong second quarter performance on the defensive end. Purdue Fort Wayne shot just 29% from the field in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Both teams had their best offensive outings of the game in the third, where the Salukis topped the Mastodons, 22-21. In the fourth, however, the offense hit a standstill for SIU. The Salukis scored just six points on 3-of-12 shooting from the field, while the Mastodons scored 15 to send the contest into overtime.
In overtime, Purdue Fort Wayne outlasted Southern Illinois, 16-10, to earn the 70-64 victory. The Salukis shot 33.8% from the field, 30.0% from deep, and 75% at the line in the loss.
Shemera Williams led the Salukis in scoring with 22 points and was an efficient 7-of-8 in terms of free throws. Laniah Randle posted a career-high five blocks while also adding two steals and nine rebounds. Seairra Hughes tallied her first career double-double, 14 points and 12 rebounds, in the loss.
SIU, now 1-2, will stay at home for its next game on Sunday at 1 p.m. against North Texas.
