
Women's Basketball Concludes Homestand on Sunday against North Texas

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (1-2) is looking to get back-on-track on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts North Texas at the Banterra Center.Â

- Southern Illinois holds a record of 1-2 and has lost two-straight. In its last game, SIU lost to Purdue Fort Wayne, 70-64, in overtime on Wednesday.Â
- The Salukis scored just 16 points in the second half, shooting 35% from the field and were 1-of-8 from the three-point line. In overtime, Southern was out-scored, 16-10. SIU had 23 turnovers and forced 20. Shemera Williams' 22 points led the way for the Salukis in the loss.Â
- SIU has scored over 75 points in two of its three games to begin the campaign. In 2022-23, the Salukis scored at least 75 points in 15 of their 31 total games. Southern was 11-4 when reaching the 75-point plateau one season ago.Â
- Through three games, SIU is fifth in the Valley in scoring at 75.3 points-per-game.Â
- Last season, Southern averaged 73.4 points-per-game, which ranked third in the MVC.Â
- SIU is second in the conference in turnover margin at 5.33, trailing only Murray State (6.33). On the year, Southern has forced 73 turnovers and had 57.Â
- The Salukis lead the Valley in steals-per-game (13.67). SIU has had at least 12 steals in every game so far this season. Nationally, Southern is tied for 21st in the category.Â
- SIU is off to another strong start in 2023-24 in terms of playmaking. The Salukis are fourth in the conference in assists-per-game (16.67) and sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.88).Â
- Head coach Kelly Bond-White brings four newcomers into the 2023-24 season. Three of SIU's newcomers are freshmen (Tkiyah Nelson, Maddy Saracco, Angela Samuel), while its fourth is a transfer (Se'Quoia Allmond). Allmond comes to SIU after spending the last two seasons at Loyola Marymount University.Â
LEADING THE SALUKISÂ
- Shemera Williams leads the Salukis and is tied for second in the Valley in scoring at 19.0 points-per-game. The senior is tied for 71st in the country in the category.Â
- Williams has scored at least 16 points in all three games to start the year. The veteran accomplished this feat twice in all of 2022-23.Â
- Jaidynn Mason is the team's second-leading scorer with 15.5 points-per-game, which is 10th in the Valley. Mason's 3.5 steals-per-game ranks third in the conference.Â
- Quierra Love is tied for the Valley lead in steals-per-game (3.7), which is also tied for 26th in the NCAA. Love has posted two or more steals in all three games, including six vs. SEMO in the season-opener.
- In three games played, Laniah Randle is averaging 9.3 points-per-game and a team-high 9.3 rebounds-per-game. Randle is second in the Valley in rebounding, and has had 23 boards in her last two games. 13 of the 23 rebounds have been of the offensive variety.Â
- Seairra Hughes is shooting an effecient .542 from the field to go along with her 11.3 points-per-game and 7.0 rebounds-per-game. Against Purdue Fort Wayne, Hughes tallied her first-career double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds).Â
- The Salukis' roster is made up of four seniors, five juniors, one sophomore, and three freshmen. SIU's four seniors are Williams, Love, Adrianna Katcher, and Sydney Prochaska.Â
LOOKING AT NORTH TEXASÂ
- The Mean Green is off to a strong start in 2023-24, posting a 3-1 record through four games. North Texas' lone loss was at Texas A&M, 74-55, on Nov. 12.Â
- In its last game, UNT defeated Stephen F. Austin, 78-55, on the road on Thursday. The Mean Green shot 46/39/72 in the game, and scored 48 points in the second half. DesiRay Kernal's 17 points led the way for UNT in the win.Â
- The Mean Green has scored at least 78 in three of its four games, including 117 vs. UNT Dallas on Nov. 6.Â
- Jaaucklyn Moore is the team's leading scorer at 16.8 points-per-game, followed by Kernal's 15.5.Â
- Jason Burton is in his first season as the team's head coach.Â
