Salukis Come Up Short Against Bradley, 50-48

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Jawaun Newton's half-court heave didn't fall, and Southern Illinois saw its 10-game homecourt streak come to an end as the Bradley Braves walked away with a 50-48 victory Sunday afternoon at Banterra Center.
"Give credit to Bradley – I thought it was a high-level college basketball game," head coach Bryan Mullins said after the game. "Both teams played extremely hard, but we came up a possession short."
"There are a lot of really good teams in this league, and you have to be one or two possessions better and they made a big play there at the end."
The Salukis had two shots to take a lead with under 20 seconds as Newton's 3-pointer from the top of the key hit every part of the rim except the bottom but Southern was able to corral an offensive board by Marcus Domask who passed to Xavier Johnson who was not able to convert.
The Braves would get the rebound and be fouled with 3.7 seconds left – with Ja'Shon Henry missing both at the line before Newton threw up the halfcourt shot as time expired.
It was First team All-MVC forward Rienk Mast that put the Braves up at the end as he converted a four-point play with under 30 seconds remaining after being fouled on a 3-pointer from the wing.
Domask was the lone Saluki to reach double-figures as he led all scorers with 23 points to go with nine rebounds and four assists. Trailing 9-2 early, the Waupun, Wisconsin native went on a 6-0 run of his own to get SIU back in the game and neither team led by more than five points as it was back-and-forth for the remainder of the game.
Entering the game as the top two defensive teams in the Missouri Valley Conference, the defense was on full display throughout as both teams were held to just under 32 percent from the field.
Bradley won the battle in the paint 30-24 as Mast tallied a team-high 13 for the Braves. Henry added 12 points and five boards in the win for BU.
