Salukis Drop Midweek Matchup to Billikens, 11-3

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Saint Louis scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back as the Southern Illinois baseball program dropped its home opener Tuesday night at Itchy Jones Stadium, 11-3.
Free bases were an issue throughout as Southern struggled to find the zone, issuing eight walks in the game as well as hitting three batters. The Billikens took advantage of the opportunities, cashing in runs in four innings with most of the damage coming in a three-run first and a six-run sixth.
The Salukis (3-6) looked to answer back with a crooked number in the bottom of the second with three base hits, but SIU was only able to scratch across one run before stranding the bases loaded.
Noah Cook, Nate Lyons, and Kaeber Rog each tallied base hits in the inning, with Rog's RBI single scoring the first run of the day for SIU. Southern looked to have another run score on the Rog base hit but a runner lost balance at third allowing SLU to limit the damage.
Saint Louis (4-3) was able to blow the game open in the sixth inning with six runs to extend their lead to 10-1. The Billikens used a trio of hits including a home run as well as two walks and two hit-by-pitches to put up the runs.
Southern put runs on the board in the seventh and eighth innings but it wasn't enough.
The Salukis sent eight pitchers to the mound in the loss. Jake Combs made his second start of the season, going three innings, allowing six hits and four runs to fall to 0-1 on the year. The bullpen surrendered eight walks in four and a third innings, including two in the SLU sixth.
Saint Louis right-hander Dawson Smith (1-1) took the staff win for the Billikens after tossing the first inning and surrendering one hit.
Nathan Bandy put together a three-hit day for the Salukis while Ryan Rodriguez and Rog added two hits each.
