Carbondale, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Salukis took down the Butler Bulldogs once again on Monday afternoon with a 8-0 win to finish the 2023 Saluki Invitational 4-0 and move to 14-2 on the season. Madi Eberle got the win in the circle, throwing a six inning complete game while giving up just one hit and one walk on her way to a shutout.Â
Eberle's ERA of 1.20 and 7-1 record both currently lead the Missouri Valley through 41 innings of work. She's the only pitcher in the conference to have an ERA below two with over 40 innings pitched.Â
"We challenged them to put together a complete ball game today and they did that. That game had offense, defense and pitching," expressed head coach Jen Sewell. "It's an awkward day to play. Many of them were rushing from class to get to the game. But they came ready to go."
Southern totaled a season-high 12 hits from seven different Salukis, including six extra-base hits. Emma Austin led the Dawgs going 3-for-3 with a pair of triples, a walk, and three runs from the leadoff spot. Rylie Hamilton and Elizabeth Warwick both went 2-for-4 with a double, a run, and a pair of RBIs each, while Aubree DePron was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a run. Hamilton walked the game off in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single to shallow center field that scored Austin from third following her second triple of the day.Â
Outfielder Aubree DePron still leads the MVC with a .500 batting average as she's had a hit in 13 of SIU's 16 games with 21 total on the year.Â
Freshman Jackie Lis continued to stay hot at the plate following her walk-off single on Saturday against UT-Martin as she hit her third home run of the season in the third inning. Lis is currently tied for first in the MVC with 15 runs, along with teammate Emma Austin.Â
The Salukis got their offense going in the third, totaling four runs on five hits - four of which went for extra-bases. From there, the Dawgs continued to extend their lead in each of the next three innings with an RBI-single from Warwick in the fourth, a pair of runs off an error and wild pitch in the fifth, and finally Hamilton's walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth.
"We are just so thrilled to be their coaches. They have let us push them hard," said Sewell. "They have taken the coaching and stepped up to every challenge. We have a big couple of weeks ahead, but we deserve some rest and that's a great game to end on."
The Salukis have now won nine straight games as they improve to 14-2 overall and 8-0 at home. SIU currently leads the Valley as a team with its .377 on-base percentage while having the second highest batting average of .291.
Next up for Southern is a trip to Middle Tennessee State for a four-game tournament taking place from Thursday, March 9 - Saturday, March 11.Â
