
Salukis Host Southern Indiana Tuesday

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Saluki baseball wraps up a four-game homestand Tuesday night at Itchy Jones Stadium with Southern Indiana coming to town. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

AROUND THE HORN
• SIU has five walk-off wins this season with the last coming in midweek action against Austin Peay.
• Southern Illinois continues to lead the nation in double plays with 49 turned over 44 games. SIU's 1.11 double plays turned per game are also tops in the country. SIU has turned 14 double plays in MVC play.
• The Salukis are 11-2 in games when they hit two or more home runs.
• SIU has already hit the fifth-most home runs in a single season with 59 in 44 games, averaging 1.34 home runs per game. Southern has broken the single season home run record in each of the last two seasons (88 in 2022 & 84 in 2021).
• SIU is 15-0 in games when leading after eight innings and 13-1 when leading after seven innings.
• The top two spots in the MVC in toughest to strikeout belong to SIU's Steven Loden and Nathan Bandy. Loden strikes out once every 9.7 at bats while Bandy strikes out once every nine at bats. Loden's mark is 66th best among all batters in the country.
• Steven Loden leads SIU with 13 multi-RBI games. He has three four-RBI outings.
• SIU is 56-of-69 on stolen bases which is tied for first in the MVC with Illinois State and Belmont.
• Southern is 3-3 in extra-inning games this season, falling in 12 innings to Illinois State Sunday.
THE SERIES & MATCHUP
• Southern Illinois and the Screamin' Eagles have met just three times before Tuesday. SIU is 2-1 against USI, taking the first game of a doubleheader, 6-1 in 1989 before dropping game two 6-2. The two teams met earlier this season in Evansville with SIU coming out on top 16-9 in a wild midweek matchup.
• The Salukis scored 13 runs in the final three innings, including an eight-run ninth-inning rally to claim a 16-9 win over the Screamin' Eagles. SIU entered the ninth inning trailing 9-8 but reeled off a season-high eight runs in the final frame to complete the rally. Southern outhit USI 13-10 with five Salukis recording multiple base hits. Pier-Olivier Boucher and Kaeber Rog went for three hits apiece while Boucher and Bennett Eltoft led the team with three RBIs each.
• USI enters play at 15-28 overall and 6-12 in the Ohio Valley. The Screamin' Eagles dropped their weekend series to SIUE last time out, with the Cougars taking two of three games in Edwardsville.
• As a squad, USI is hitting .272 led by Ethan Hunter with a .364 average in 39 starts. Lucas McNew is the only other USI batter hitting over .300 at .321. McNew leads the team with 16 doubles and 57 RBIs. On the mound, Southern Indiana holds a combined team ERA of 7.05 with opponents hitting .304.
LAST TIME OUT
• The Salukis are coming off a weekend series loss to Illinois State with the Redbirds taking two of three.
• SIU took the series opener with an 11-1 run-rule win over Illinois State, but Southern would score just 11 more runs over the next two games while the Redbirds scored 15 to take the series.
• SIU hit .319 over three games led by Ryan Rodriguez who was 7-for-13 at the plate with five runs scored.
• SIU hit seven home runs over the series with Matt Schark going for two in the opener, including the 'walk-off' homer in the seventh to end the game.
• Southern was 11-for-13 on the base paths while ILS was 4-for-4. The Salukis entered the weekend fourth in the MVC in stolen bases but now sit tied for first with the Redbirds and Bruins with 56 stolen bases. Since conference play began, SIU has gone 27-for-33 on stolen base attempts.
