
Pointer, Norris highlight Day Three of MVC Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships have concluded in Normal, Ill., with Iaunia Pointer and Daniel Norris highlighting Southern Illinois' efforts on the third and final day of the meet.
"Southern represented well in a lot of events this weekend," said Richard Jones, Director of Track & Field and Cross Country. "A few injuries impacted our team score on the men's side, but I was glad to see the fight in our entire team."
Southern Illinois' men's team finished fourth during the championships with a score of 94.5. On the women's side, the Salukis were fifth with a final score of 68.Â
Iaunia Pointer finished first in two separate events, leading the competition with a time of 11.40 in the women's 100m dash and 23.46 in the women's 200m dash. Both times rank inside the top 10 all-time at Southern Illinois.Â
Pointer was also on SIU's third-place women's 4x100m and 4x400 relay teams, along with Shavell Riley, Vashti Grey, and Miracle Berry. In the 4x100, the team posted a time of 45.39, and then a time of 3:46.65 in the 4x400.Â
The men's 4x100m relay team also finished third in their race, as Lamark Threadgill, Xavier Preston, Christian Donatelli, and Jeremiah Hamilton put up a time of 40.06.
Daniel Norris earned a first-place finish in the men's discus on Sunday, tallying a mark of 54.89m. Norris was joined on the podium by fellow Saluki Cole Targgart, who was third in the event with a mark of 53.61m.Â
Jadon Robertson was named the MVC Freshman of the Meet on day three after earning points in the men's long jump, 110m hurdles, javelin throw, and high jump.Â
Claire Ayers represented Southern on the podium in the women's 1500m, finishing third with a time of 4:32.47. Teammate Brianna Nieset wasn't far behind, ending up in fourth-place with a time of 4:33.36.Â
After placing second in the men's 3000m steeplechase, Dawson Smith was at it again on Sunday, earning a second-place finish in the men's 5000m run after putting up a time of 14:31.73 in the event.

"The slogans, '1Team1Goal' and 'WinAs1' were very evident," Jones said. "My first year as director of this program has been very successful and I can't wait to build on this foundation. We now move on to the national qualifying athletes and seeing how far we can go in the postseason."
What's Next
Southern Illinois will now turn its attention towards the NCAA Preliminary Round in Sacramento, Calif., which will run from May 24-27.Â
