- The Salukis are off to a 1-1-0 start in 2023. In the season opener, SIU defeated Jackson State, 2-1, with goals coming from McKensey Bunch and Kaitlin DuCharme. Southern then fell to IUPUI on the road over the weekend.
- Southern Illinois has 16 returners and 15 newcomers on its roster. 13 of the 15 newcomers are freshmen, to go along with the team's two transfers (Sydney Byrd and Dana Cruz).
- SIU is 1-0 at home to start the new campaign. In 2022, the Salukis were 4-3-3 while playing in Carbondale. Away from home, Southern posted a record of 4-2-1.Â
- This past season, Southern Illinois made its first-ever Missouri Valley Conference tournament after going 8-5-4 overall and 5-2-3 in conference play in 2022. The Salukis also got the opportunity to host the first two rounds of the tournament, including its second round fixture against Murray State.Â
- DuCharme and Bunch are tied for the team lead in goals to begin the year, with each scoring one so far. DuCharme was also tied with Emma Spotak for second in goals a year ago, tallying three over the course of the season.
- Ava Pugliese has the team's lone assist, setting up Bunch's goal against Jackson State. The assist was the first of the freshman's Saluki career.
- Both goalkeepers, Chantelle Symes and Ary Lougher, have started a match so far this season. Symes got the nod for the season opener, making two saves against Jackson State. Lougher got the start for the match at IUPUI, and made eight saves in the contest.Â
- Graeme Orr is in his first season as head coach of the women's soccer program. Assistant coaches Carley Kandel and Ash Phillips are also in their first year with the Salukis, while Jake Edwards returns for his second season as a graduate assistant on the coaching staff.
- Orr comes to SIU after spending the previous 12 seasons as the head coach at Division II West Alabama. He was announced as the Salukis' head coach on May 30, 2023.Â
- The Eaglesham, Scotland native, was the first head coach in West Alabama women's soccer history, starting the program in 2011. During his 12 years with the program, Orr posted an overall record of 115-78-19 and conference record of 79-44-9.
- UWA recorded 10-consecutive and had 11-straight postseason appearances under Orr.Â
- Orr was previously an assistant coach at North Alabama before arriving at West Alabama.Â
- The Roos are off to a 1-1-0 start in 2023 after defeating Lindenwood, 2-1, in their first match and then falling to Iowa, 2-0, on Aug. 20.Â
- Kansas City is in the midst of a four-game road trip that will also include trips to Saint Louis and Colorado State. The Roos won't play at home again until Sept. 3 vs. UIC.Â
- Â Last season, the Roos went 2-11-5 overall and 1-5-3 in Summit League action. This was the third-straight year the program had finished below .500.Â
- Anna Jennings is the lone goalscorer for the Roos, finding the back-of-the-net against Lindenwood.Â
- Brianna Castleberry and Sophia Smith have both tallied one assist through the opening two games.
- Riley Moore has started both matches in goal, making 10 saves while allowing three goals during that span.
- Kansas City is 1-0 against Southern Illinois all-time.
- The lone meeting between the two programs came on Aug. 27, 2021, in Carbondale when the Roos defeated SIU, 3-2. Spotak scored one of Southern's two goals in the match.Â
