Salukis Drop Home Match to SEMO on Sunday

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Two goals in the second half for Southeast Missouri State (SEMO) proved to be the difference on Sunday as the Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (1-2-1) lost, 2-0, to the Redhawks at home.
"I thought they passed the ball better than us," head coach Graeme Orr said. "We let a mistake really rattle us. There were still opportunities to go and tie the game, but we have to show more endeavor and more mobility to go do that."
Neither side was able to put a dent on the scoreboard in the first half, as the two teams went into the halftime break tied at 0-0.Â
Into the second half, the Redhawks started to build more chances on the offensive end. This ultimately led to the match's opening goal in the 55th minute when Cayla Koerner found the top right corner to give SEMO a 1-0 lead.Â
Southern Illinois thought it had an equalizer after Emma Spotak sent a cross in to Dana Cruz, who found the back-of-the-net, but the goal was ruled offside, keeping the Salukis down by one.Â
The Redhawks scored their second of the game in the 81st minute, as Emily Baker doubled the team's advantage. This was the final goal of the game, leading to a 2-0 ending score.
Chantelle Symes made five saves for the Salukis in-goal, while McKinley Stiff led the team with two shots during the match.
Southern Illinois, now 1-2-1, will be on the road for its next three matches, starting on Thursday, Aug. 31, when the Salukis travel to SIUE to play the Cougars at 7 p.m.Â
"We will go again," Orr said. "We'll go compete, and we'll go and make sure we can put up a performance that gives us an opportunity to get some more points."
