Southern Illinois Travels to SIUE on Thursday to Face Cougars

Through the first four matches of the season, the Salukis hold a record of 1-2-1 heading into the upcoming three-game road trip.
In its last match, SIU fell to Southeast Missouri State, 2-0, on Sunday, Aug. 27. Both of SEMO's goals were scored in the second half.
In the game prior, Southern Illinois drew to Kansas City, 1-1, on Thursday, Aug. 24. After conceding early on, Kaitlin DuCharme scored a free kick to level the match in the first half.
The Salukis have scored three goals to start the season, with DuCharme being responsible for two of them. The graduate student's first goal of the year was the game-winner in the season opener against Jackson State on Aug. 17.
McKensey Bunch was SIU's first goalscorer in 2023, scoring on a long-ranged effort in the same match.
Freshman Ava Pugliese has Southern's lone assist on the year, assisting Bunch's goal vs. Jackson State.
On the defensive end, SIU has allowed six goals going into the final match in August.
Both Ary Lougher and Chantelle Symes have made two starts each for the Salukis in-goal. Lougher has allowed three goals and made 15 saves, while Symes has also allowed three goals and made seven saves.
Bunch and Emma Spotak lead Southern in shots so far this season, with the pair both having five each.
Only Riley Maulick and Kylie McDermott have played all 360 minutes through the first four games of the campaign.

Head Coach Graeme Orr

Graeme Orr is in his first season as head coach of the women's soccer program. Assistant coaches Carley Kandel and Ash Phillips are also in their first year with the Salukis, while Jake Edwards returns for his second season as a graduate assistant on the coaching staff.
Orr comes to SIU after spending the previous 12 seasons as the head coach at Division II West Alabama. He was announced as the Salukis' head coach on May 30, 2023.
The Eaglesham, Scotland native, was the first head coach in West Alabama women's soccer history, starting the program in 2011. During his 12 years with the program, Orr posted an overall record of 115-78-19 and conference record of 79-44-9.
UWA recorded 10-consecutive and had 11-straight postseason appearances under Orr.
Orr was previously an assistant coach at North Alabama before arriving at West Alabama.

Looking at SIUE

The Cougars boast a record of 2-2 so far this season.
SIUE has won two consecutive matches after starting the year 0-2. The Cougars defeated Purdue Fort Wayne, 2-1, on Aug. 25, and then won on the road at IUPUI, 3-2, on Aug. 27.
Savannah DeFini, Matea Diekema, and Mary Fetter all scored in the win in Indianapolis.
The Cougars have scored six goals as a team, and conceded eight.
Six different players have found the back-of-the-net for SIUE, with those six being DeFini, Diekema, Fetter, Taryn Moore, Kasey Neidhardt, and Ella Robinson.
Macie Begley's two assists are the most on the team.
Taylor Spiller is the lone Cougar goalkeeper to make an appearance so far this season. Spiller has started all four matches, allowing eight goals and making 19 saves during that span.
Derek Burton is SIUE's head coach, and is in his 14th season in the role.

Series History

The Cougars are 2-0-1 against the Salukis all-time.
In their last meeting, the two sides drew, 1-1, in Carbondale. Both goals came in the second half, with former Saluki Liz Brechtel scoring the equalizer in the 69th minute off of a Spotak assist.
