CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (1-6-4) played Evansville to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at home.
"I think tonight you've seen a very committed team that works extremely hard," head coach Graeme Orr said. "I thought we were very good in all phases of play at certain times. We just have to get more experienced and put it together for 90 minutes."
Southern Illinois got on the board first through Emma Spotak. In the 12th minute, Spotak stole the ball from the Purple Aces' defense and found the back-of-the-net to give the Salukis the early lead.
The goal was Spotak's first of the season, and seventh of her Saluki career. This makes the graduate student second all-time in goals behind Liz Brechtel (10) for the all-time program lead.Â
"It's definitely an honor," Spotak said. "Looking back at the past five years here, I'm really proud of not just myself, but the team too. I always knew I wanted to come and make a difference for this program, and that means a lot."
As a team, the Salukis out-shot Evansville, 7-6, in the first half while also blanking the Purple Aces through the opening 45 minutes, carrying the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.Â
Evansville started to get going on the offensive end in the second half, resulting in the game-tying goal late in the match. After a scramble in the box, Ryleigh Anslinger scored the equalizer to make it 1-1. This would be the final score.
Dana Cruz and Riley Maulick led the Salukis in shots with two each in the draw. Goalkeeper Chantelle Symes made three saves.Â
The Salukis will look for their first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season in their next match on Sunday at Illinois State at 1 p.m.
