The Salukis open up October with a 1-6-4 record overall and 0-3-1 record in MVC play.
In its final match of September, Southern Illinois drew to Evansville, 1-1, on Thursday night at home. Emma Spotak scored the lone goal for the Salukis in the first half, while goalkeeper Chantelle Symes made three saves in the match.
Spotak is now alone in second place all-time in goals for SIU, with seven on her career. Liz Brechtel's 10 are the most in program history.
McKensey Bunch is SIU's leading scorer with four goals on the year and five in her career as a Saluki.
Kaitlin DuCharme is second in goals this season for Southern with two on the campaign. The graduate student also has one assist.
Symes has been the primary goalkeeper for SIU, making nine starts with 33 saves and 13 goals allowed so far this season.
Freshman defender Veronica Gonzalez's 975 minutes are the most on the team, followed by Kylie McDermott's 959.
Bunch's 14 shots lead the Salukis, with Spotak, Dana Cruz, and Sam Dodd being tied for second with 10 each.

Head Coach Graeme Orr

Graeme Orr is in his first season as head coach of the women's soccer program. Assistant coaches Carley Kandel and Ash Phillips are also in their first year with the Salukis, while Jake Edwards returns for his second season as a graduate assistant on the coaching staff.
Orr comes to SIU after spending the previous 12 seasons as the head coach at Division II West Alabama. He was announced as the Salukis' head coach on May 30, 2023.
The Eaglesham, Scotland native, was the first head coach in West Alabama women's soccer history, starting the program in 2011. During his 12 years with the program, Orr posted an overall record of 115-78-19 and conference record of 79-44-9.
UWA recorded 10-consecutive and had 11-straight postseason appearances under Orr.
Orr was previously an assistant coach at North Alabama before arriving at West Alabama.

Looking at Illinois State

The Redbirds have a record of 2-4-3 overall and 0-1-2 in conference play heading into Sunday's match against SIU.
On Thursday, Illinois State drew, 1-1, at Belmont. Kelsi McLaughlin scored the equalizer in the 80th minute off of a Ava Watson assist.
At home, the Redbirds have a record of 1-1-2 this season. The lone win came against Western Illinois on Sept. 10, when Illinois State won by a final score of 4-1.
Haley Glover is Illinois State's leading scorer, tallying five goals in nine games.
Watson's three assists are the most on the team.
Audrey Brown is the lone goalkeeper to make an appearance this season for the Redbirds, making nine starts on the year. Brown has posted 33 saves and allowed 18 goals in those nine starts.
Marisa Kresge is in her second season as the head coach of Illinois State's women's soccer program.

Series History

SIU is 1-2 all-time against Illinois State.
Last season, the Salukis earned their first-ever win against the Redbirds, defeating Illinois State, 1-0, on Oct. 16, 2022.
This will be the second time the two programs have met in Normal, Ill.
